Islington Liberal Democrats plan to reduce the cost of living and make life more affordable.
People across our community are being pushed to the brink by soaring water and energy bills, rising rents, and ever-increasing service charges.
Meanwhile, companies like Thames Water are polluting our rivers, funnelling money into executive bonuses and debt repayments—while failing to fix leaks or reduce bills. On top of that, energy companies have profiteered from the energy crisis at our expense. Labour government, mayor and council continue to waste money and choose to cut winter fuel payments for 2025 and deny disabled people vital support.
This is not the way things should be – Liberal Democrats would do things differently.
We would immediately:
- Freeze energy prices for the year, funded by a windfall tax on the excessive profits of water companies.
- Place Thames Water into special administration, recover millions siphoned off by billionaire owners, and return it to customers. Ban bonuses for failed executives.
- Freeze council tax for the most vulnerable people, funded by a tourism tax on hotel stays in the borough.
These are just the first steps, We would also over course of a government:
- Build 50% of all new homes in Islington as social rent homes, prioritising local people—bringing down housing costs and keeping communities together.
- Freeze all Tube and train fares in London for a year, partly funded by cutting back on Sadiq Kahn’s taxpayer-funded spending on advertising and propaganda.
- Abolish the leasehold system, replacing it with commonhold to save leaseholders hundreds in unfair service charges.
- Cap private sector rent increases so they cannot rise faster than inflation.
- Provide free personal care and end unfair charging for care and support.
