Fix our Lifts
It’s time to end the gamble on whether the lift works — fix them now
Lifts across Islington Council housing estates are breaking down far too often. Some lifts are old and may need replacing—but even lifts that are less than 10 years old are repeatedly failing. For many residents, it has become a lottery whether the lift will work on any given day.
This is not acceptable. Reliable lifts are essential for residents with disabilities, older people, parents with buggies, and anyone who cannot easily use stairs. Constant breakdowns affect daily life, safety, and access to our homes.
We are calling on Islington Council to take urgent action to keep our lifts working by:
- Improving repair and maintenance contracts, with clear performance standards and consequences when they are not met
- Properly supervising and monitoring contractors, to ensure repairs are completed to a high standard
- Introducing a robust maintenance programme, including preventative maintenance to reduce repeat breakdowns
- Prioritising repairs to lifts that are frequently out of service, with clear timelines and regular resident updates
- Ensuring future lift replacements are delivered by the best-qualified contractors and completed to a consistently high standard
Residents deserve safe, reliable lifts—not repeated failures and poor-quality repairs.
