Sadiq Khan’s inflation-busting tube fare rises show “Labour have given up on London”

15 Dec 2025

Labour’s London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has confirmed that tube fares in London will rise by 5.8%: more than inflation and in spite of a national fare freeze.

Islington Liberal Democrats have slammed the move, saying that it is more proof that Labour has abandoned London.

This comes as the Government is set to impose massive cuts to funding for London councils, leaving Islington facing a general fund budget gap of approximately £31 million for 2025/26.

Commenting, Liberal Democrat campaigner Rebecca Jones said:

“At a time when people are struggling to pay their rent and bills, the last thing they need is their travel costs to hit them in their wallets as well.

It couldn’t be clearer that Labour have given up on London: there was nothing for London in the recent budget, and now we’re expected to cough up for inflation-busting fare increases despite a national freeze.

Sadiq Khan talks about investment but he’s failed to deliver numerous tube projects; bus routes are being cut across the capital; and stations like Arsenal are being shut due to staff shortages. And don’t get me started on the scale of fare evasion at places like Finsbury Park.

If he can find the money for phoney freezes at election time or snazzy adverts in the cinema, he can find the money to avoid squeezing hard-pressed commuters even more.
